Political Discussions You've Gotten Into

Living in Ohio and in an election year I seem to be getting into more and more political discussions. My first discussion involved racism. I was talking to a guy about music. I had just met the guy. Anywho I mention rap... He makes a Freudian slip (I think) and says the "N" word. I jokingly say "You're a racist" based on a conversation I had with a good friend of mine about the N word and anyone who says it is automatically racist. We've come to the conclusion that it comes down to circumstance and context... blah blah blah, anywho back to the guy who said it. He responds by saying "No but I am discriminative towards black people". He went on to decribe black people as criminals and said that there shouldn't be mixing amongst the races. By definition that is racism but I didn't point that out. He asked me about my stance on racism as if we were a couple of Klan buddies. I stated my case, that I am completly against racism, I'm voting for Obama, and my cousin is half black, etc.. He made another statement loud and clear that he was all for McCain. I then asked him to name me any black serial killers in response to crime comment. To which he walked away. This guy was a friend of my friend's boyfriend. And she's half black. I didn't tell her til later. She felt hurt and didn't know what to think.

I have more but I just wanted to start off this thread. Any responses or experiences, post away.

haha! this topic bombed. ok, i've got another convo or two to post, if not for discussion than for good reading, if anyone's reading that is.

ok, my girlfriend took me to Tumbleweed to for 99 cent margarita monday. i gots drunk of course :D and we met up with her friend and her new boyfriend. little did i know we were meeting a bunch of his friends (2 other guys and a girl) as well. not knowing any of them i make the assumption that they are right leaning based on the way they look (sorry if that's shallow).

my gf and her friend go to the bathroom to discuss her new bf and during that time the new bf refers to Obama as a Muslim. i keep my mouth shut cause i'm drunk, his friends outnumber me and i don't wanna get beat up. unexpectedly the girl and guy across from the table get into an argument w/him defending Obama correcting his ignorance. my gf & her friend get back to the table mid discussion and she blames me for starting it lol! i'm just like "wasn't me" in surrender mode.

anywho, we all start into it now, 6 to 1. the anti-Obama guy isn't voting for McCain though because he is "too liberal". he then mocks Nancy Pelosi's "a total failure" comments on Bush. to which i replied that pretty much defines W completely. the right-wing guy then stopped the discussion after we brought up the recession and my gf's mom losing her house. he knew he was in a losing battle.

i enjoy discussions like these. it makes me think that Ohio might not be a red state again afterall despite what the polls are saying.

Peace...Its crazy how many people think the Obama smears are real! I meet people like that all the time and I kindly offer to email the facts etc...Most of my family votes Republican, many because of the abortion issue, and several because of being fiscally conservative and loaded...:~) Anyways, I can't argue a thing with either group because they have specific reasons for voting the way they do and I wont change that. What I can do is discuss myths vs reality and try to clear the air so at least they can see our whole candidate minus the smears/lies...and in future conversations I hope they are able to set the stories straight.
